During my study abroad trip in Italy, we took a day trip out to the ancient Roman town of Pompeii. In AD 79, Pompeii and many surrounding villas, including Herculaneum, was mostly destroyed and buried in volcanic ash after the eruption of the volcano, Mount Vesuvius.
Pompeii is HUGE! It was a long tour (around 3 hours) and we still did not see the whole property. So if you are ever visiting the property and want to see it all, you will definitely need a whole day. We started our tour visiting their colosseum that housed a museum, followed by a tour of an estate on the outside of town, then we wandered down the streets into what use to be the heart of the city.
The center of Pompeii is full of some of the incredible statues with the most rich history.
I had a blast touring Pompeii and can’t wait to return soon to finish seeing the rest of this beautiful ancient town.
